Nations determined to fight terror: Swaraj
India and the United States called on Pakistan on Tuesday to bring to justice the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, while reiterating the threat posed by gangster Dawood Ibrahim, the Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Al Qaeda and the Haqqani network. The two countries issued a joint statement in Washington after the first India-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue, a dialogue with a focus on boosting trade ties and enhancing regional security. “This demonstrates the fact that we are determined to fight terrorism together,” India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said.
Separatist leader Geelani’s passport suspended
The passport of Kashmiri separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani was suspended by the government on Tuesday to prevent him from flying to New York for an event at which he was likely to have spoken against India. The government action came after reports that the hardline Hurriyat faction leader was planning to travel to attend the annual meeting of foreign ministers of member states of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and Kashmir Contact Group from September 27 to October 1.
Government withdraws draft encryption policy
Facing a backlash from several quarters, including Internet activists, the government on Tuesday withdrew its draft encryption policy as concerns grew about intrusions into personal privacy. The Department of Electronics and Information Technology will now frame a new draft. Observers see this withdrawal as a damage control exercise to ensure that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Silicon Valley this week is not tarred by this controversy. There were fears that the chiefs of tech giants there would ask Modi, himself an avid Twitter user, embarrassing questions on the policy.
Petition filed on Hardik Patel's alleged disappearance
A habeas corpus petition was filed in the Gujarat High Court on Tuesday, asking for Patel community leader Hardik Patel to be produced in the court. The Gujarat Police on Tuesday claimed that Hardik Patel disappeared from a meeting in north Gujarat. “The police claim that he escaped them and disappeared, but we think that the police have arrested him and are not disclosing that information,” said a key member of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti, the outfit headed by Hardik Patel that is seeking reservations in educational institutions and government jobs for the Gujarat's dominant Patel community.
EC seeks explanation for BJP leader’s remarks
Taking note of the remarks of a West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party leader claiming the Election Commission is now under the party’s control, the poll watchdog on Tuesday asked party national president Amit Shah to explain the statement. West Bengal BJP leader Joy Banerjee made the remarks at a public meeting in Birbhum on September 20.
