PM has talks with Irish counterpart Kenny
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday sought Ireland’s support for India’s attempt to gain membership of the United Nations Security Council and on international export control regimes including Nuclear Suppliers Group during wide-ranging talks with Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny. During a one-day visit to Dublin, Modi and Kenny also discussed Ireland’s visa policy with regard to the requirements of India’s information technology firms, as well as global challenges like terror and radicalisation. Modi is the first Indian PM to visit Ireland since Jawaharlal Nehru.
Somnath Bharti moves SC to avoid arrest
Aam Aadmi Party legislator Somnath Bharti on Wednesday, moved the Supreme Court seeking protection from being arrested in a domestic violence case in which the Delhi High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal broke his silence on the issue on Wednesday and said Bharti was becoming an embarrassment to the party and should surrender.
BJP says Rahul is on 'forced vacation'
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday took a dig at Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for his visit to the United States, claiming that he was on a “forced vacation” as his party's allies in Bihar, Janata Dal (United) and Rashtriya Janata Dal, wanted him out of the Bihar poll campaign. The Congress had initially claimed that Rahul Gandhi was on a personal visit but later said that he was attending a conference in the US.
Hardik Patel surfaces after disappearance
Patel quota agitation leader Hardik Patel, who went missing after giving the police the slip on Tuesday, surfaced under mysterious circumstances at a highway in Surendranagar district of Gujarat on Wednesday, claiming that he had been abducted. According to Patel leaders, Hardik Patel called them at around noon and asked them to pick him up from the spot. After being found, he claimed that he had been abducted by people with weapons.
‘Court’ is India’s entry for the Oscars
Court, the saga of a radical poet who is accused of waging war against the state, will represent India in the best foreign language category at the Oscars. A jury headed by filmmaker Amol Palekar chose the multi-lingual drama from over 30 entries. Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane, Court follows the never-ending trial of a balladeer who is accused of encouraging a municipal worker to commit suicide through his fiery songs.
