Islamic State militants seize Kurdish villages
Around 60,000 Syrians, mostly Kurds, crossed into Turkey on Saturday as Islamic State militants seized several villages in northern Syria. Turkey opened its border on Friday after civilians from the Kurdish town of Ayn al-Arab fled their homes fearing attacks by the militant group. To prevent a massacre, around 300 Kurdish soldiers have joined the Syrian Kurdish forces to fight the militants. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that IS fighters had killed at least 11 Kurds, and around 800 residents who fled their villages were missing.

 Afghan presidential rivals agree on unity deal
Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, the rival candidates in Afghanistan's disputed presidential election, struck a power-sharing deal on Saturday, putting an end to the political stalemate of over two months. Both parties agreed to form a government of national unity with Ghani as president and Abdullah nominating a chief executive. The development comes following the completion of a comprehensive audit and recount of all eight million votes in the July election after both Abdullah and Ghani accused each other of fraud.

Yemeni government and Houthi rebels reach ceasefire
Yemen's government on Saturday agreed to a truce with the Shia Houthi group after weeks of protests led by the Houthis in the capital Sanaa. A United Nations special envoy confirmed that preparations were underway for a ceremony to seal the pact on Sunday. More than 100 people have died in clashes since Thursday as Houthis stormed key buildings and forced the government to shut Yemen's airport for two days. The group has been demanding a new government and more representation for their community in the Sunni majority country.

Boko Haram continues insurgent attacks
Boko Haram militants over Friday and Saturday attacked a market in Nigeria's northeastern town of Mainok, killing at least 30 civilians. In another attack by the extremist group, four people were killed in a border town in North Cameroon. Over the past few weeks, the Islamist fighters have seized  a series of towns and villages in northeastern Nigeria. In its attempts to establish an Islamic caliphate in Nigeria, Boko Haram has killed more than 2,000 people this year.

Tropical storm leaves thousands displaced in Philippines
Around 20,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes as tropical storm Fung-Wong hit parts of central and northern Philippines, triggering heavy rains and flooding . Five people are reported to have been killed in the storm, which is expected to hit Taiwan on Sunday. This is the second tropical storm to hit Philippines in two weeks.
