China cracks down on gambling rings, pornography
Chinese authorities have detained over 30,000 people thought to be involved in pornography and gambling, Xinhua reported. In the latest arrests, police arrested 3,014 people in the Guangdong province and, in Huizhou City, busting a $4.82 million online gambling ring.  The anti-pornography arrests have intensified since China launched a campaign to "clean up" the Internet.

Al Qaeda’s hearts ‘bursting with pain’ over Peshawar attack
The attack on an army public school in Peshawar on December 16 that killed 149 people, mostly children, has the Al Qaeda’s hearts "bursting with pain", according to a video released on Sunday. The statement was repeated in a four-page emailed statement originating from Al Qaeda South Asia spokesman Osama Mehmood. "The guns that we have taken up against Allah's enemy America and its pet rulers and slave army should not be aimed towards children, women and our Muslim people," he added. The Afghan Taliban, loosely affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban that carried out the attack, has also condemned the incident.

Kim Jong-un threatens military strikes against US
On Sunday, North Korea’s President Kim Jong-un accused his American counterpart, Barack Obama, of recklessly spreading rumours of a Pyongyang-orchestrated cyber-attack on Sony Pictures. He warned the US of strikes against its mainland, calling it a "cesspool of terrorism". North Korea’s statements come in the wake of Obama stating last week that he would consider retaliating against the hackers, who the Federal Bureau of Investigation has deemed to be from North Korea.

UN official calls Saeed ‘sahib’, India seeks clarification
India has sought clarification over the use of the term "sahib" to describe Hafeez Saeed during a United Nations Security Council panel meeting on December 17. Saeed is thought to be the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Gary Quinlan, the Chair of the UN Security Council Committee, referred to Saeed as "sahib", a prefix denoting respect by stature. In fact, Saeed is a UN-designated terrorist.

French police shoot down man who tried to kill them
Police in central France on Sunday shot dead a man who tried to attack them with a knife while shouting "Allahu Akbar" (‘God is great’). According to sources, the man was a Burundi-born French national with a criminal record. Three officers were injured before he was shot dead. A member of the French police union said he brandished a long knife, and was banging on a door’s fittings and attack the officers when they opened the door to see what he was doing. The attacker’s brother is believed to have expressed a desire to travel to Syria.
