While Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the famous Terracotta Warriors Museum in Xi'an in China made quite a splash on Twitter on Thursday, largely because of the stunning photographs shared by @MEAIndia, there was another photograph that left many Modi-watchers intrigued.

Such messages have invited media attention earlier as well, and paeans have been written on his handwriting on the basis of various photographs of his messages in various visitors' books that are routinely tweeted by @PMOIndia or @MEAIndia during his foreign tours.

What is perplexing, however, is that the handwriting seems to change from message to message:




Narendra Modi has a well-deserved reputation for his oratory and is known to tailor his message based on the audience he is addressing. Could it be that he also has the ability to try out different styles of handwriting? Or is there a simpler explanation: that these messages are written by some accompanying official and the prime minister only appends his signature? Our investigations reveal that the question seems to be perplexing many on Twitter as well, though clearly the following is patently untrue, as evidenced by Thursday's tweet:

18:44, May 14, 2015: The @MEAIndia twitter handle, of course, seems to give the impression that Vikas Swaroop tweeted all the older tweets as well, whereas he became the external affairs ministry spokesperson only recently, on April 19. The earlier tweets were actually by Syed Akbaruddin, the previous spokesperson.
