The US Supreme Court decision on Friday to allow gay couples to get married across the country set the world cheering. "No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family," wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy, in the 5-4 verdict. "In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were."

In India, too, Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgendered people and their supporters avidly discussed the verdict, even though homosexuality remains illegal in the country. Some hoped the US verdict would push India to abolish Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalises homosexuality.

Twitter was filled with darkly humorous observations about how gay marriage would clash with Indian customs such as paying out dowry.

Others used the opportunity to highlight some specifically Indian problems.

Bobby Jindal's criticism of the verdict made him the butt of a few jokes.

Others couldn't resist imagining how enterprising Indians would use the new provision.
