Mexico star Javier Hernandez on Thursday took to Instagram to urge his country’s football fans to stop their homophobic chants during the World Cup in Russia, Reuters reported.
“To all Mexican fans in the stadiums, don’t shout ‘Puto’,” Hernandez wrote. “Let’s not risk another sanction.”
The post comes on a day when world football governing body Fifa slapped a CHF 10,000 fine on the Mexican football federation for what it called “discriminatory and insulting chants” during the side’s 1-0 win over Germany on Sunday.
Mexican fans regularly shout a slang word during an opposition goal kick. The term is a term used for a male sex worker, which gay rights groups have claimed to be homophobic.
The Mexican football federation was pulled up 12 times for the same chant during the World Cup qualifying stage.
