Prime Minister Narendra Modi needs to rein in his party members or face losing credibility both at home and abroad, a report by leading risk management firm Moody’s Analytics stated on Friday. The report added that India can only reach its growth potential if the government delivers on its reform promises, reported the Press Trust of India.

The report pointed out that the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre was finding it difficult to push crucial Bills because it did not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha. However, it said the “government hasn’t helped itself” of late, with its leaders making many controversial comments about beef-eating, Dalit killings and other polarising topics. The report warned that the contentious statements will not only increase ethnic violence in the country, but also draw Parliamentary debates away from economic policy.
