RBI dismisses rumours that scribbled-on currency notes won't be allowed after January 1
Messages were circulating on social media claiming that only clean notes would be accepted as legal tender from 2016.
Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan on Tuesday refuted rumours that notes that have been scribbled on would not be accepted from January 1. PTI reported that Rajan, in an audio message, said such notes would also be accepted as legal tender, and denied issuing a communiqué that stated banks would not accept these notes.
The RBI's statement added that all currency notes issued by RBI are legal tender and banks and the public can freely use them. “There is no terminal date for acceptance,” Rajan said.
