At least 12 people have died in the chemical factory blast in Dombivli in Thane district of Maharashtra, a National Disaster Response Force official said, with the search and rescue team finding the body of a civilian on the site on Saturday morning. “Six bodies were recovered day before yesterday and four were were found yesterday. Also, an injured died in hospital, taking the toll to 11 till yesterday,” the official said, indicating that the rescue work is "almost over", according to PTI.

After an investigation, the NDRF has assured that there was no risk of toxic gases from the factory spreading in the area, reported The Hindu. “The factory contained containers of propargyl alcohol, a liquid chemical which is toxic if ingested or inhaled and causes corrosion if it comes into contact with human skin. However, it does not spread toxic components in the air if it burns,” Commandant Anupam Srivastava, chief of the NDRF battalion in Pune, said

The owners of the chemical factory have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The police have also approached the factory inspector and other departments to figure out the exact cause of the blast and fire in the chemical plant on May 26. The explosion that was followed by a massive fire damaged more than 600 establishments, including homes and offices, within the 2-km radius of the factory. The Devendra Fadnavis government has ordered an investigation into the incident.
