A Reliance LYF handset went up in flames on Sunday, triggering a demand for recall of the mobile phone. Consumer Tanvir Sadiq, who is associated with Jammu and Kashmir National Conference party tweeted that his family “had a narrow escape” after the phone exploded and said that Reliance Lyf must recall all such faulty handsets. However, it is not clear where and how the incident took place.

Sadiq works as the political secretary to former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Abdullah later retweeted the post and said that he would not use his own LYF handset anytime soon. “Glad everyone is safe Tanvir. This looks like it was a very narrow escape. I won’t be using my handset anytime soon, that’s for sure,” said Abdullah.

After the picture went viral on social media, Reliance’s LYF contacted Sadiq and sought his details. The company also issued a statement saying, “LYF range of phones are designed and manufactured with global standards by some of the world’s leading manufacturers of mobile phones. We are assessing the cause and will conduct a thorough investigation in the matter. LYF phones go through multiple stringent quality control measures, company officials said.

The incident comes two months after Samsung recalled its new Galaxy Note7 smartphone following several reports of handsets exploding. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has also banned the use of this the Note7 handset on flights.
