All India Radio’s Imphal station decided to blank out coverage of the ongoing Manipur tourism festival on Monday, saying the state government has been indifferent to a blast that took place on its premises November 20. All information on the Sangai festival, which began on November 21, was left out of its programmes on Monday night, reported PTI. This is the first time in 53 years of its existence that the Imphal station has boycotted a government event.

AIR Imphal’s employess also staged a sit-in protest within the complex. On Tuesday afternoon, Manipur’s Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam visited the station. Gaikhangam, who is also the state’s home affairs minister, pledged more security for the staff at the Imphal station. After his intervention, the station began airing news related to the 10-day festival.

On Sunday, suspected militants had hurled three hand grenades inside the station, where the Central Reserve Police Force barracks is stationed. Two CRPF personnel were injured in the attack.

Governor Najma Heptulla inaugurated the festival on Monday evening in Imphal. Dignitaries from Japan, Myanmar and Thailand were also present at the event, which aims to promote tourism in the state.
