Results from Maharashtra’s municipal elections are trickling in and show that the Bharatiya Janata Party has won 51 municipal chief’s posts so far. Results of 140 of the 147 municipal councils have been declared. BJP’s ally Shiv Sena is second with 24 seats while the Congress has won 21 seats. The National Congress Party has earned 19 and independent candidates have bagged 25 seats.

Elections for 147 municipal councils and 17 nagar panchayats across 25 districts in Maharashtra were held on Sunday, PTI reported. As many as 15,826 candidates competed for the 3,705 seats in Maharashtra’s municipal councils and nagar panchayats, reported ANI. The polls saw a turnout of 70% of the electorate.

Overall, the BJP is leading with 610 seats and its alliance partner Shiv Sena with 402 seats, ANI reported on Monday evening. The initial numbers peg the NCP at second position with 482 seats so far, while the Congress has secured 408 seats. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has secured 12 seats till now while the Bahujan Samaj Party won 4 seats of the total 3,705. Independent candidates won 583 seats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has thanked the people of Maharashtra “for placing their faith in BJP”, while party president Amit Shah said the results were a “wake-up call for parties” that are against the Centre’s demonetisation move.
