Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan met Congress leader Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday and discussed the political situation in Tamil Nadu, PTI reported. Haasan had launched his political party Makkal Needhi Maiam in February.

“It is too early to decide,” Haasan said when asked whether he would support the Congress in its effort to get Opposition parties together to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Haasan had met Congress President Rahul Gandhi and held similar discussions on Wednesday. He had also met Election Commission officials in New Delhi to register his political party.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Bharatiya Janata Party, however, made light of Haasan’s meetings with the Gandhis, PTI reported.

“As far as he [Haasan] is concerned, let him meet anyone, that is his right,” said Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar. “Let him meet even Trump...there is no need for us to bother about such meetings since we [AIADMK] are powerful and are with the people.”

Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan of the BJP said Haasan had met the leaders of a party that had been “rejected by people”.

Earlier this month, Haasan had met Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru to discuss the sharing of Cauvery river water between their two states. The Cauvery water sharing dispute has led to unrest in Tamil Nadu in recent months, as the Centre kept delaying the formation of a water management board for weeks. The board was finally formed through a notification on June 1.
