Despite lacking star power and critical acclaim, Luv Ranjan’s Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has raked in more than Rs 100 crore at the box office in a little more than three weeks since its February 23 release. The comedy, starring Kartik Aaryan, Sunny Nijar and Nushrat Bharucha, is the second highest-grossing Hindi film of 2018 after Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, which has reportedly made close to Rs 500 crore so far at the global box office.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted that Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has made Rs 101.69 crore so far in India. Its collections surpassed those of Akshay Kumar’s critically and commercially successful Padman in its third week.

Ranjan’s most successful film at the box office has outperformed several big-ticket releases of 2018 like Siddharth Malhotra-starrer Aiyaary, Anushka Sharma’s Pari and Saif Ali Khan-starrer Kaalakaandi.

It stars Aaryan as the overprotective Sonu, who tries to convince his best friend Titu (Nijar) that the woman he is about to marry (Bharucha’s Sweety) is not right for him. The film cashes in on Ranjan’s trademark brand of casual sexism camouflaged in male banter that made his Pyar Ka Punchanama movies a success.

Ranjan is now producing a film starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu that will mark the directorial debut of editor Akiv Ali.
