The publisher of American academic Wendy Doniger's On Hinduism on Wednesday denied reports that it had withdrawn copies of the book.
"We are not aware of any such thing except that we are looking forward to the right resolution of the situation," said a statement issued by Aleph Book Company and its parent, Rupa.
'The Times of India' had reported on Wednesday that representatives of Aleph had phoned bookshops across Bangalore and asked them to return all copies of On Hinduism.
Aleph had been served a legal notice on Saturday by the Hindu extremist Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti demanding that the book be withdrawn. The group claimed that On Hinduism had hurt the sentiments of Hindus and had presented Hindu deities in a disrespectful way.
Last month, the same group had prevailed upon Penguin India to withdraw the scholar's book, The Hindus: An Alternative History.
