Goa: State government bans organisation from entering state
Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the state assembly on Wednesday evening that his government has decided to ban the Hindu right-wing group Sri Ram Sene in the state. The group shot into the headlines after it assaulted women in pubs around Mangalore last year. Sene chief Pramod Muthalik had announced in June that his organisation would open up a branch in Goa. This announcement led to protests by the tourism industry, artists and women's organisations, who feared similar attacks in Goa.

Manipur: Irom Sharmila says she will not end fast
On her release after 4 years in detention, human rights activist Irom Sharmila told reporters that she will continue her fast protesting against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act until it is repealed.  "In my native land, it is because of AFSPA that there are so many widows," she said. "I am not a victim of the conflict here, but I don’t want coming generations to grow up in this darkness."

Uttar Pradesh: Badaun sisters were not sexually assaulted, says CBI
The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday confirmed forensic reports showing that two girls found hanging from a tree in Badaun in May had not been raped. Reports by the Hyderabad-based Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics have  cast a shadow upon the local post-mortem report claiming that the teenagers had been sexually assaulted. The CBI suggested that this is an incident of honour killing and doubts have emerged over the version of events presented by the victim's parents.

West Bengal: All women police patrol inaugurated in Kolkata
Kolkata Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha on Wedneday inaugurated a set of patrol vehicles to be used exclusively by women police. These vehicles come under the Reinforce City Patrol programme started by the Commissioner of Police to attract more women into the police force. These patrols are expected to work in two shifts, from 6.30 am to 12.30 pm and 12.30 pm to 8.30 pm.

Kerala: State Congress President says government committed to total ban on liquor
Kerala Congress President VM Sudheeran on Wednesday told a public gathering that the state government under Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was working towards a total ban on liquor. He said that consumption in liquor had fallen across the state after 418 bars had been ordered to shut in April.
