A Delhi court on Saturday granted anticipatory bail to RK Pachauri and rejected the Delhi Police’s plea to take him into custody for interrogation in a sexual harassment case. The police had filed a petition in the court claiming that Pachauri had not been cooperating with the investigation. "There is no substance in the plea of prosecution for recall of earlier order to grant interim protection to the accused," Additional Sessions Judge Raj Kumar Tripathi said. Another court had last month granted Pachauri protection from arrest till March 27 on the condition that he would not contact or enter the premises of The Energy and Resources Institute. At the end of February, Pachauri had resigned as head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change after allegations of sexual assault by a member of the TERI staff.
Karnataka: Truth will come out in IAS office’s death, says CM
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah on Saturday promised that the truth about the death of Indian Administrative Service Officer DK Ravi’s death would come out, and that his government would not protect anyone. “We are not going to hide anything," he said. The Chief Minister blamed the opposition for politicising the issue. Ravi, known to be an opponent of the sand mafia in the state, was found hanging in his apartment in Bengaluru on March 16.
Maharashtra: CM shirking responsibility, says Pansare’s daughter
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had shirked his responsibility by not accepting the full blame for the death of social activist Govind Pansare, said his daughter Smita. While Fadnavis had taken pride in the “progressive and liberal” tradition of the state, he had done nothing when her father, was murdered a month ago, she said. Smita Pansare and a group of Left bloc leaders met Fadnavis on Friday to press for a speedy investigation into the killing.
Haryana: Sonia Gandhi demands quick relief for rain-hit districts
Congress President Sonia Gandhi visited rain and hail-hit areas in Haryana on Saturday and urged the authorities to provide immediate relief to affected farmers. Gandhi began her visit in Bhiwani district, after which she travelled to Rohtak, which is represented by Deepinder Hooda, son of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Gandhi also visited Karnal, which is represented by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The state's Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has announced compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre for a 100% loss of crops.
Uttar Pradesh: Be wary of BJP, Akhilesh tells youth
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday told young people to be wary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which he said had “instigated fights” among people. Even US President Barack Obama had “taught lessons to those who poison communities”, Yadav said at a rally in Falavada. He claimed that the Samajwadi Party, to which he belongs, was a “helpful” party.
