A very dishonest article, meant to obfuscate not enlighten. One might be forgiven for thinking that muslim identity politics started just a couple of years ago. Muslim politics in the sub continent has always been identity politics. From the khilafat through partition to now. Muslims have always organized themselves only around religion & religious identity. Whether its Kashmir or Malabar. Hyderabad or Aligargh or Assam. Like a cat which always lands on its four legs, Muslim politics will always, always land on identity.

Liberals are right in trying to keep the protest apolitical and secular. BJP want the political climate to remain hindu vs muslim. Displaying prayer caps and niqabs is not going to help the cause. Since the advent of ISIS, non-muslims are vary of political islam.

The problem is that Muslim identity includes claims that "other" everyone else. Take for example the shahada. It doesn't just claim that Allah is our god, but that there is no god other than Allah. Imagine being a non-Muslim in a protest where these slogans are raised. She/he would be just as much in opposition to this claim as she/he is in opposition to the NRC. Imagine a Hindu protest, say against the law regarding Aiyappa temple. You would never hear exclusivity claims from them. Jai Shri Ram or Bharat Mata ki Jai are just praising their respective gods, not claiming that others are false. I would welcome any response from the author or others explaining how non-Muslims should be expected to be comfortable with such claims by Muslims

USED THEM AS VOTE BANK POLITICS ONLY.WHY MUSLIMS ARE NOT PROGERESSIVE LIKE HINDUS AND OTHER COMMUNITY IN INDIA.THEY ALWAYS QUOT ISLAM FOR ANY ISSUES.WHY ? HINDUS HAVE HAD NEVER QUOT GITA,MAHABHARAT ETC.WHEN IT CAME TO REFORM OF THEIRS TRADITION. YOUR ARTICLE IS MISSING SOMETHING REAL ISSUES. MUSLIMS NEVER WANTED TO MINGLE IN OTHERS SOCIETY THROUGH OUT WORLD AS HINDUS DO SO WORLD WIDE. HOW MANY OF THESE PROTESTERS HAVE READ CAA FULLY? THIS GOVERNMENT HAS GIVEN CITIZENSHIP TO MUSLIMS OF THESE THREE COUNTRIES. RAJASTHAN CHIEF MINISTER HAS GIVAN LAND OWNER PAPERS TO HINDU REFUGEES IN RAJASHTAN RECENTLY.

The author has clearly not seen the Muslim protests of Kashmir in 1989-1990. They were far more larger, violent and divisive with identity all over them. We often talk about learning from history. It is not just for liberals but for right wingers too. The modern concepts of liberty of thought fail when the history is full of opression of the majority by the minority in India. It gets further worse when you see the history of other places where Islam turned into majority and it's impact on the natives who did not share the faith. Confucius said, wise people learn from others mistakes, fools from their own. Now Indians definately haven't shown much wisdom in the years since independence but at least now they are learning. Look at China and Xinjiang. That's wisdom. Just saying.
