Birla Group is largest contributor to BJP’s poll fund

It emerges that the Aditya Birla Group was the largest single contributor to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s election fund, donating Rs 7.5 crore through the company’s General Electoral Trust in 2012-2013. The Group used to be a top donor to the Congress. The Group was implicated in the coal allocation scam in the last months of the United Progressive Alliance regime.

Rajdhani derailment in Bihar kills four, injures 18

Four people were killed and at least 18 others injured when 12 coaches of the New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express derailed near Bihar's Chhapra district on Wednesday. The state government initially suspected it to be a Maoist attack, following a bandh call on Tuesday, but sabotage was later ruled out. The driver of the train confirmed that he did not hear any explosion.

Subramaniam hits out at government, Supreme Court

Former solicitor-general Gopal Subramanium withdrew his candidature for a spot on the Supreme Court bench on Wednesday, saying that Narendra Modi’s government consciously branded him “unsuitable” for elevation to India’s apex court. The Indian Express reports that Subramanium sent a nine-page letter to Chief Justice RM Lodha, claiming this government did not respect the independence of the judiciary.

Sushma Swaraj lands in Dhaka

External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj landed in Dhaka, Bangladesh, last night, the first official visit abroad of her tenure. The Press Trust of India reported that she will hold talks with the neighbouring nation’s top leadership on key bilateral issues, including the Land Boundary Agreement, the proposed Teesta river pact and illegal immigration.

France, Switzerland, Nigeria through to knockouts

France drew 0-0 with Ecuador, while Switzerland defeated Honduras 3-0. The results mean both European nations advance from Group E to the next round. Earlier last night, Nigeria qualified for the round of 16 despite losing to Argentina, who are already through.
