Odisha: Sterilisation procedures to be done only in healthcare centres 

The Odisha government has banned sterilisation camps after an inquiry showed that bicycle pumps had been used on 56 women during tubectomies at one such camp in the state’s Angul district late last month. Health secretary told The Times of India that in the future “only established healthcare centres with proper operation theatres can conduct the surgeries”. The ban comes weeks after 13 women died and many took seriously ill in Chhattisgarh after undergoing sterilisation procedures at a family-planning camp in Bilaspur district.

Haryana: Rampal booked in murder case

Controversial godman Rampal of Satlok Ashram in Barwala has been booked in the case of a 35-year-old man's murder, The Tribune reported. The victim, Randhir, was found hanging in a bathroom in the ashram in August this year. His father subsequently approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, raising the suspicion that his son was a victim of human sacrifice. After a preliminary inquiry, the police booked Rampal. The godman is already facing several criminal charges framed against him in the wake of the stand-off between his followers and the police that led to the death of many.

Karnataka: School textbooks to be revised

The state government has set up a committee to revise school textbooks to weed out all “anomalies” from them. As many as 164 members have been drafted into the panel to study the textbooks for Classes I to X, Deccan Herald said . Meanwhile, a section of teachers in the state has urged the committee to probe the indiscriminate conflation of mythology and history in the new textbooks.

West Bengal: TMC MPs told to ignore village adoption scheme

Taking her battle with the Bharatiya Janata Party a step further, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has asked her party MPs to disregard Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna, the prime minister’s cherished scheme under which each MP has to adopt a village. Only two of the 42 Lok Sabha MPs and 16 Rajya Sabha MPs from the state have adopted a village thus far, The Times of India said. One of them is Bharatiya Janata Party’s S S Ahluwalia.

Bihar: Case filed against Sharad Yadav for 'hurting' Dalit sentiments
A case has been filed against Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav in a Patna court under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for allegedly hurting the sentiments of dalits and members of the musahar castes, The Times of India reported. According to the plaintiff, Yadav told mediapersons last weekend in Kanpur: “How can he [Jitan Ram Manjhi] become the chief minister? He has not seen books and school.” Manjhi was born into the musahar community.
