Suspects in Bengaluru blast affiliated with SIMI
Police on Monday said that five members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India who escaped a Madhya Pradesh prison in October 2013 are the prime suspects in the Bengaluru blast case, which killed one woman. They added that efforts were on to identify if the five were in touch with any local cadres during their stay in Bengaluru from December 2013 to September 2014. They have also already been linked to a bank robbery of Rs 46 lakh from Karimnagar in Telengana in February, a blast in the Bangalore-Guwahati express in May, a blast in Pune in July and abBlast in Bijnor in September.

Search expands for AirAsia flight with no leads yet
Going into its third day without any leads, the search for AirAsia flight QZ8501 on Tuesday drew in at least 30 ships, 15 aircraft, seven helicopters, a US Navy destroyer and a Chinese frigate. The flight was en route from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore when it lost contact with flight controllers. It emerged on Monday that the pilots of the flight were wary of threatening clouds, and had sought permission to climb over them. They didn’t receive immediate approval as six other flights were in the vicinity, crowding the airspace. Minutes later, 8501 slipped off the radar without a distress signal.

Government moves for ordinance to amend Land Acquisition Act
In a bid to ease the process of acquiring land, the Union Cabinet on Monday said it intended to promulgate an ordinance to amend the Land Acquisition Act, 2013. The amendment introduces five new categories of projects that will not require prior consent from affected families or a social impact assessment. The new categories include industrial corridors. The Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the amendment was being introduced to expedite growth, saying “neither the farmer is able to get benefit nor is the project completed in time for the benefit of society at large”.

Australia poised to go 3-0 up in test series
On Monday, Australia set India a near-record 384 runs to win the third test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Australia are already 2-0 up in the series after winning the Adelaide and Brisbane tests. India have not won at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the last 33 years, making the target more formidable. By Tuesday morning, India had lost Shikhar Dhawan early.

Two open fire at police car in LA
On Monday, two men opened fire on a police car patrolling a tough area of Los Angeles, although the officers inside the car were not hurt. One of the suspects in the attack was arrested while the other is on the loose. The shootings have occurred at a time when tensions between the police and the people are at highs, especially after the police killing of a black man in Missouri and the killing of two police officers in New York. The Los Angeles Police Department said the attack was completely unprovoked, and that they would continue investigation until they have nabbed the second man.
