It was only fitting that a stand-up legend and a master of observational comedy should be greeted with a rush of jokes. On Wednesday, a statement to the media announced that comic superstar Jerry Seinfeld is coming to Mumbai to perform at a festival on March 14 and 15. The price of each ticket: Rs 7,500.

Seinfeld’s fans in India welcomed the news of his visit with hurrays on Twitter. Few could, however, miss the opportunity to quip about the steep tickets or post a reminder of the All India Bakchod controversy.

In his statement Seinfeld announced: “I have always been fascinated by India and its culture. I have great respect for its people and their way of life. It is a great honour for me to be invited to come there and make fun of it in person.”

Best known for playing a semi-fictional version of himself in the sitcom Seinfeld, he will be performing in Mumbai as part of the on-going Stage42 festival. The festival aims to showcase artists and their experiences in comedy, theatre, music and food. Seinfeld’s shows will be held at the National Sports Club of India.
