The Madhya Pradesh police department will conduct forensic tests to determine the cause of death of Aaj Tak journalist Akshay Singh, who collapsed on Saturday while reporting on Madhya Pradesh's Vyapam scam. Singh died soon after interviewing the parents of Namrata Damor, one of the 33 people linked to the scam. Singh's funeral in Delhi on Sunday was attended by leaders from the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, which both protested the handling of the case by Madhya Pradesh's Bharatiya Janata Party-led government. Singh's family has called for the Central Bureau of Investigation to look into the matter and denied that the reporter died of a heart attack.
Coast guard intercepts 'suspicious' Iranian boat off Kerala
The Coast Guard intercepted a foreign fishing boat with an Iranian crew on Sunday. The boat was seen and intercepted off the coast of Kerala and is now being under police custody with the suspects facing interrogation. Officials from the Coast Guard have indicated the boat was intercepted based on inputs from central and state agencies. Satellite phones, which are prohibited, were also found in the boat. The boat left Kalat in Iran on May 25 and it was likely involved in the transfer of high-value contraband at high seas, a news agency quoted a coast guard statement as saying.
Rashtrapati Bhawan files complaint against Lalit Modi
Rashtrapati Bhawan has filed a complaint against former Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi for posting allegedly defamatory tweets about President Pranab Mukherjee and his Secretary Omita Paul. Modi has alleged that Mukherjee, when he was Finance Minister, pushed the Enforcement Directorate to act against him after he raised questions about the shareholding pattern in Kochi's franchise in the IPL. The questions led to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor's resignation from the Union government.
Sadhvi Jyoti attacks Rahul over food parks
Claiming that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had been misguiding people by suggesting that a proposed food park in his constituency had been cancelled, Union Minister of State for Food Processing Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti alleged on Sunday that Gandhi was "not concerned about the country". Jyoti added that the food park in Gandhi's Amethi constituency had been conceptualised together with one for Bharatiya Janata Party associate Baba Ramdev's and that Ramdev's was functional. Jyoti also said that Gandhi did not avail of land for the park when it was being allotted and did not take any steps to set up the facility.
Nepal Maoist leader to visit India
The chief of Nepal's Maoist party, Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), will visit India next week at the invitation of the Indian government. Party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as Prachanda, will visit India from July 14 to 18. The trip comes as Nepal is working to finalise a new Constitution.
