At least 20 people were killed and several houses were washed away on Saturday when a landslide caused by heavy rains struck a village in the Chandel district of Manipur. Only one villager was rescued from the debris by teams from the Assam Rifles and other locals. District officials said that they had begun to provide relief materials, adding that the affected villagers had also been moved to relief camps. Several houses in nearby villages were also swept away, with officials saying that they had no current estimate of the total number of casualties.
Maharashtra: SP leader suspended over demand for Memon’s widow
A leader of the Samajwadi Party’s Maharashtra unit was suspended by the party on Saturday for demanding a Rajya Sabha seat for Raheen Memon, the widow of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon who was executed on Thursday. Mohammad Farooq Ghosi had written to party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav requesting him to nominate Raheen Memon, saying that she would be able to become the “voice of the weak”. Maharashtra Samajwadi Party President Abu Asim Azmi said that the party had begun the process to expel Ghosi. Ghosi said that he had written to Yadav in his personal capacity.
Delhi: BJP posters question government ad spending
The Bharatiya Janata Party has put up a series of posters around Delhi questioning the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party government for the amount of money spent on its advertising campaign. Claiming that the government had spent over Rs 526 crore on the campaign, the posters ask why the AAP had not allocated the money towards schemes such as an increased number of security cameras in the state.
Telangana: Minister says Charminar could be razed
A controversy broke out in Telangana on Saturday after state Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali said that the historic Charminar monument in Hyderabad would be razed if it became structurally weak. Ali said that the iconic structure would pose a threat to the lives of those people around it if it was allowed to remain in a dilapidated condition. Congress leader VH Rao criticised Ali, while conservation experts noted that it was the government’s duty to “protect heritage and pass it on to the next generation”.
Bihar: Nitish claims improved immunisation rate
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said that the state had witnessed an improvement in its immunisation rate since his Janata Dal (United) party had come to power. Saying that the rate of immunisation had improved from 18% to 78%, Kumar claimed that this was higher than the national average. He added that his government was planning to form 10 lakh self-help groups to improve the situation with regards to immunisation.
