Andhra Pradesh: YSRCP targets TDP over ‘silence’
The YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress will stage a dharna in New Delhi on Monday to protest against the delay in special status being accorded to Andhra Pradesh. YSRCP leaders said that the protest would also target the ruling Telugu Desam Party government over its alleged silence on the issue. The leaders alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party had ignored the issue despite assuring voters during last year’s Lok Sabha elections that it would grant special status to Andhra Pradesh if it was voted into power.

Maharashtra: NCP criticises Fadnavis
The Nationalist Congress Party criticised Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his failure to visit Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan to observe Quit India Day on Sunday. NCP Mumbai unit President Sachin Ahir said that Fadnavis’ absence from the park, from where Mahatma Gandhi began the Quit India movement in 1942, was “unfortunate”. However, Fadnavis later said that he had been in Nagpur to unveil a memorial to freedom fighters, adding that the opposition was making “baseless” allegations against him.

West Bengal: Congress calls for state-wide bandh
The West Bengal unit of the Congress on Sunday called for a state-wide bandh on August 20 after leader of the party’s youth wing was beaten to death inside a college in the West Midnapore district. Three members of the ruling Trinamool Congress were arrested after being named in the First Information Report filed in the murder of Congress Chatra Parishad member Krishnapada Jana. However, state police later said that security footage did not show any of the three accused in the area where Jana was murdered. Banerjee had alleged that Jana was killed during a factional fight inside the college.

Delhi: Police stop Swaraj Abhiyan march at border
The Delhi Police on Sunday allegedly stopped a tractor march organised by the Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav-led Swaraj Abhiyan at the state’s border in Haryana. Yadav claimed that the police did not allow 200 tractors from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh enter the national capital despite them having permission to do so. The march is part of the Jai Kisan Andolan to protest against “anti-farmer” moves such as the Land Acquisition Bill.

Jharkhand: Lack of education cause of belief in witchcraft, CM says
Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Sunday said that a lack of education was the cause of superstition, including the belief in witchcraft. A day after five women were lynched in the state for allegedly practicing witchcraft, Das said that efforts needed to be made to educate every child in the state. Statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau have shown that 400 women have been murdered for witchcraft in the state since 2001.
