The Delhi High Court on Tuesday criticised the Delhi Police for illegally detaining former Aam Aadmi Party leader Yogendra Yadav and 82 volunteers of his Swaraj Abhiyan organisation. The court asked the police to explain why they had not produced Yadav and the others before a magistrate even though they were detained on Monday night. The detentions took place during a day-long protest on farmers' issues at Jantar Mantar, which was attended by farmers from several states. Yadav and the Swaraj Abhiyan volunteers were later released on the order of a special executive magistrate.
Tamil Nadu: Maran moves against bail cancellation
Former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court's decision to cancel the interim bail granted to him. He also sought anticipatory bail to avoid arrest in case alleging that he had run an illegal telephone exchange case. On Monday, the Madras High Court ordered Maran to surrender before a Central Bureau of Investigation court within three days. The CBI has alleged that more than 300 high-speed telephone lines were provided to Maran at his Chennai residence when he was Union Telecom Minister between 2004 and 2007.
Jammu and Kashmir: Spurt in number of youths joining militancy
The Indian Army on Tuesday said that there had been an increase in the number of youths joining militant groups in the Kashmir Valley. Intelligence officials said that groups such as the Hizbul Mujahideen and the Lashkar-e-Taiba were intensifying their recruitment efforts to heighten separatist violence in Jammu and Kashmir.
Maharashtra: Abu Salem denies giving guns to Sanjay Dutt
Former gangster Abu Salem on Tuesday denied that he had provided weapons to Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt before the 1993 Mumbai blasts. In his statement before a Terrorist and Disruptive Activities court in Mumbai, Salem denied that he gave Dutt two AK-47 rifles and hand grenades before the blasts. Salem also denied that he went to Dutt's home to retrieve a bag containing the weapons. Dutt was convicted in the 1993 blasts case for possessing weapons and was sentenced to five years in jail in 2013.
Bihar: Government to provide clothes to poor
The Bihar government on Tuesday approved a programme to provide clothes to landless and economically-backward people. The plan, authored by the state's Social Welfare Department, was approved at a meeting of the state Cabinet. The programme aims to provide poor people with clothes, sheets and woollen blankets. The Cabinet sanctioned Rs 1 crore for the plan.
