For the third time within a fortnight, Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik has returned the file relating to appointment of Lokayukta to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday. The state has been witnessing a tussle between Raj Bhawan and the state government over appointing Justice Raveendra Singh as the new Lokayukta, with the file recommending Singh's name being twice returned by the Governor earlier. Meanwhile, a communique from Raj Bhavan has stated that the Allahabad High Court had on July 23 asked the state government to suggest a name after consulting the chief minister, Chief Justice of the High Court and Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly.
Punjab: Amarinder Singh seeks clearance for sugarcane farmers' pending dues
A day after meeting All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday led a dharna to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s residence. He sought to press for clearance of sugarcane farmers’ pending dues. Singh was accompanied by Congress Legislative Party leader Sunil Jakhar and several sitting and former party MLAs. Policemen posted on the spot did not stop the protesters and the sit-in continued for 35 minutes. “Do you think with all this love, respect and support of MLAs, Congress workers and leaders and also the general public I should be leaving my party and everything behind?” Singh added, while dismissing rumours of forming a separate party.
Maharashtra: Mumbai police team assist CBI in Narendra Dabholkar murder probe
Two years after the anti-superstition crusader Narendra Dabholkar was murdered, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has formed a team of seven senior police officers to assist the Central Bureau of Investigation in its probe on Friday. Congress leader Narayan Rane has said the case cannot be solved till the Fadnavis-led government is in power, as it is shielding the killers. While addressing the media at the Mantralaya, Fadnavis said that recently, CBI had sought help from the police department and so the state government decided to respond. He said the seven officers will assist CBI for the next three months or till the investigation is complete. The team comprises Assistant Police Commissioner (Pune) G S Madgulkar, Inspector (Nagpur) Satish Devre, Inspector (Yavatmal) Chandrakant Ghodke, Inspector (Pune) Dinkar Kadam and Assistant Police Inspector Subhash Chavan.
Tamil Nadu: AIADMK MPs seek Narendra Modi’s intervention
A delegation of 48 AIADMK MPs on Thursday visited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought his intervention in putting an end to the month-long strike by the workers of the Central government-owned Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC). About 12,000 regular employees of the Navaratna firm are on strike since July 20 demanding a wage revision. Senior AIADMK leader and Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai, who led the delegation, said that the Prime Minister told them that he would speak to the officials concerned in this regard.
Andhra Pradesh: Farmers protest land acquisition for capital construction
Thousands of farmers on Friday staged a protest against the proposed acquisition of their land for the construction of the state capital in Andhra Pradesh. They protested outside the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) office while questioning the government's decision citing livelihood reasons among others. After the land pooling of about 33,000 acres of land from 29 villages in Guntur district, the state government is preparing to acquire another 2,500 acres of land under the Land Acquisition Act, APCRDA Chairman P Narayana said. Political parties like Congress, CPI, CPI(M) and YSR Congress also joined the farmers and participated in the protest.
