The bail application of former Public Works Department Minister Churchill Alemao was rejected by the special court in Panaji on Monday for the second time in a row. He was arrested in connection with the Louis Berger bribery scam on August 5 and has been in custody ever since. The special judge BP Deshpande pronounced an order in open court. Observing that the community's collective interest outweighs the right to personal liberty, the special court had rejected the first bail application of Alemao in the alleged Rs 6 crore-Louis Berger bribery case. Crime branch of the Goa police investigating the case has said that bribes were paid to Alemao and former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat for granting of consultancy contracts for water and sewerage projects in Goa funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency.
Jammu and Kashmir: Mig-21 crashes during routine training
A Mig-21 Bison aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed in the fields of Soibugh, Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. No casualties were reported in the accident. The pilot was able to eject from the aircraft and was rescued by an army helicopter. The Defence Ministry spokesperson released a statement stating that the fighter aircraft had taken off from Srinagar airfield on a routine training sortie. Due to poor safety record, the Russian-origin fighter aircraft has come to be called the Flying Coffin.
Bihar: LJP ultimatum to BJP on seat sharing
Lok Janshakti party and Rashtriya Lok samata Party on Monday have demanded that the seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Bihar polls be done within a week. They have recommended Bharatiya Janata Party to contest 101 seats and leave the remaining 142 to its allies in the National Democratic Alliance. LJP's Bihar unit President Pashupati Paras and his Rashtriya Lok Samata Party counterpart Arun Kumar made the demand at a joint press conference in Patna. The two leaders have also asked BJP to change the slogan for the state polls, due later this year, from "Abki Bar BJP sarkar" to "Abki Bar NDA sarkar" so that the message can be taken to all the workers of the coalition partners.
Delhi: Biker arrested after FB post goes viral
A man was arrested on Monday evening, hours after a student in Delhi alleged that he had abused her on the road and then challenged her to complain against him. The biker has been booked on charges of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. "The accused was aware that police was looking for him and as such was on the run," said Delhi Police Joint Commissioner Dependra Pathak. "We nabbed him from the same area (Tilak Nagar). We have registered an FIR against the biker under sections 354(a), 506 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code. Investigation has begun and teams have been sent to arrest the accused," Pathak added.
Karnataka: Central team to be sent to assess drought situation
A central team will be sent to Karnataka to assess the drought situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told an all-party delegation from the state led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The delegation raised the matter along with a number of other issues on Monday. It also sought the Prime Minister's intervention for an out-of-tribunal settlement on the Mahadayi River water issue, which concerns the states of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. The delegation raised the issue of severe drought in Karnataka, especially in its northern parts.
