Germany could take 500,000 refugees each year for several years, the country’s vice chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said on Tuesday. This news came in amidst fresh clashes between police and refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos where thousands of people gathered. “I believe we could surely deal with something in the order of half a million for several years,” he told. Germany expects to receive 800,000 asylum seekers this year, four times the total for 2014.

Turkish forces battle Kurds in Iraq
Turkey deployed ground forces across the border into northern Iraq on Tuesday for the first time since 2011 and stepped up its battle against Kurdish rebels. The move could frustrate the U.S.-led alliance's battle against the Islamic State group because Turkey is now hunting down the very fighters who are trying to hold back the militant group from taking more territory in Syria and Iraq. The cross-border operations came amid a wave of attacks by the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, that killed at least 31 soldiers and police since Sunday.

Large parts of Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Cyprus were shrouded in a thick cloud of dust from the storm that began sweeping into the region on Monday. "There were four killed in Deir Ezzor, including a child and an elderly woman, as well as another child in Hama province and a person in Daraa," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Russia Will Not Join OPEC: Kremlin
Russia announced on Tuesday that it will not join the Organisation of Petroleum Export Countries amid a significant decline in oil prices and ongoing deliberation among oil-rich nations over how to shore up the global market. The plummeting of China's stock market in early August and a global oversupply of oil have contribute to the record lows in oil prices. “It’s widely known that Russia has contacts on the expert level with representatives from OPEC, but as far as I know, the question of Russia joining this organisation has not been put forward and isn’t on the agenda,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
