Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made surprise visits to city hospitals on Tuesday to take stock of the steps taken to treat dengue patients. He appealed to residents not to panic in the wake of the national capital's worst outbreak in five years. "The government is making arrangements in hospitals by adding extra beds and space," Kejriwal said. On September 8, seven-year-old Avinash Rout had died due to the vector-borne disease after allegedly being turned away by five hospitals. This drove his parents to suicide. Kejriwal said strict action would be taken against hospitals that turn away patients.
Karnataka: Literacy rate should be increased, says Siddaramaiah
The state government aims at achieving 100% literacy, said Karnataka's chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday. "The state has achieved only 87% literacy rate and only 67% of women are literate," he said. "This needs to increase." To attract children to attend schools, the government has introduced several schemes, such as the mid-day meal scheme. "Healthy food is being served in schools to eradicate malnutrition among children," he said. He said that the education system should produce students who grow up to work for the welfare of society. "Every child should become a responsible citizen," he said.
Maharashtra: HC rejects plea to cancel Salman’s bail
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday dismissed two applications seeking the cancellation actor Salman Khan’s bail and the enhancement of the five-year jail term awarded to him in the 2002 hit-and-run case. The applications were filed by Sushilabai Patil, mother of late Ravindra Patil, the complainant in the case and Salman Khan’s ex-police bodyguard who passed away during the trial. In another development, the Court on Tuesday fixed the hearing of the actor’s appeal against conviction on a daily basis from September 21.
Bihar: Rabri Devi authorises Lalu to select candidates
The Rashtriya Janata Dal's state parliamentary board headed by former chief minister Rabri Devi on Tuesday authorised Lalu Prasad to select party candidates for the Bihar assembly elections, which will begin from October 12. In another resolution, the parliamentary board also authorised Lalu Prasad to hold talks with alliance partners on the issue of seat-sharing and all other matters. "Most of the party office-bearers said that they was ready to happily accept whatever Lalu ji decides," said RJD state president Ram Chandra Purbey.
Telangana: 2 Maoists gunned down in Warangal
Two Maoists were killed in a gun battle with the police in the forests of Telangana's Warangal district on Tuesday, police said. The exchange of fire continued even after five hours in Vengalapur forests in Tadwai mandal of Warangal district, about 250 km from Hyderabad. The gun battle started around 6 am after police came face to face with the guerrillas during a combing operation in the forests. Police launched the operation following information about the presence of Maoists in the region.
