The daughter-in-law of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu on Saturday accused him and his son, Narayan Sai, of mentally torturing her. Janki, who has also sought protection from police in the matter, alleged that her family and relatives were being threatened by unidentified people to withdraw the cases of domestic violence and alimony she had filed against Sai. She also accused Asaram of pressurising her father to donate valuable property in Bhopal to the self-styled religious leader.
Odisha: Three Maoists killed in encounter
A senior commander of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) was among the three alleged militants killed by security forces in an encounter in the Malkangiri district of Odisha on Saturday. Officials said that the Maoist commander, Sonadhar, had been wanted by the National Investigation Agency in connection with several attacks in Chhattisgarh. The officials said that the other two extremists killed in the attack also hailed from the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. Weapons, walkie-talkie sets and Maoist literature was seized from the site of the encounter, police officials said.
Punjab: Mann criticises SAD, BJP and Congress
Aam Aadmi Party leader and Sangrur MO Bhagwant Mann on Saturday criticised the Shiromani Akali Dal, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress over the state of the administration in Punjab, saying that the three parties had created several crises for the state. Speaking at an AAP rally, Mann said the SAD-BJP government in the state was doing nothing to help farmers. The rally was part of AAP's Punjab Jodo Abhiyan campaign, which will continue till October 2.
Himachal Pradesh: Officials assure trapped workers of early rescue
Officials in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday assured two workers trapped under a collapsed tunnel for over 160 hours of an early rescue. Officials said that both workers were being given food and water through a pipe, adding that they had also been in communication with them through a microphone linked with a webcam. Bilaspur district Deputy Commissioner MS Thakur said that rescue teams were digging through the collapsed tunnel to reach the trapped workers. “We are hopeful of rescuing them in another 24 hours,” he said.
Jammu and Kashmir: Police find militant’s body
Police in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday said that they had found the body of a militant from the Hizbul Mujahideen in the Baramulla district of the state. Officials said that the militant, identified as Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, was likely to have been killed by a breakaway faction of the Hizbul Mujahideen, the Lashkar-e-Islam. Bhat’s body was found five days after the bodies of three alleged Lashkar-e-Islam militants were found in an orchard in the Pattan area of the Baramulla district. The Lashkar-e-Islam has been named by some police officials as the group responsible for several attacks on mobile towers and communications installations in May.
