MUSIC TALKS ‘Revival of Sarangi and Interface with Carnatic Violin’ at the NCPA Experimental Theatre
Hindustani classical music playing sarangi exponents Ram Narayan and Dhruba Ghosh and their Carnatic classical music playing violinist counterparts N. Rajam and Sriram Parasuram will discuss and analyse such topics as instrument making and bowing techniques at this day-long seminar. ART After Midnight: Indian Modernism to Contemporary India, 1947/1997 at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum
Curated by gallerist Arshiya Lokhandwala, the exhibition features works of art produced after 1997, the fiftieth anniversary of Indian independence. Tickets for Indians are priced at Rs 10 per head for adults and Rs 5 per head for children below the age of 13, and tickets for foreigners are priced at Rs 100 per head for adults and Rs 50 per head for children below the age of 13.

SCIENCE TALKS Science and Beyond with Iain Stewart at Jai Hind College and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences
Scottish geologist Iain Stewart will present a lecture titled ‘Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Communicating Geology to Society’ as part of the Science and Beyond series of talks organised by the British Council and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research. The event is free.

COMEDY Stage Forty Twoo at Canvas Laugh Club
Three shows will be staged at the Canvas Laugh Club on the second weekend of this month-long comedy and music festival organised by Only Much Louder. The fest is also known as Stage42. Use Your Instant Noodle, by stand-up comics Naveen Polishetty, Sahil Shah, Sapan Verma and Utsav Chakraborty and comedy troupes SnG Comedy and Improv Comedy Mumbai, will be performed on Friday (tickets Rs 499 per head). Mostly Ha-Harmless, made up of sets by comedians Aditya Desai, Anirban Dasgupta, Kautuk Srivastava and Kenny Sebastian (who will perform his special routine ‘A Door Through A Window’), will be presented on Saturday (tickets Rs 750 per head). And American comedian Miles Allen’s One Man Breaking Bad, a parody of popular US TV drama Breaking Bad, will be enacted on Sunday (tickets Rs 1,000 per head). MUSIC TALKS ‘The Changing Profile of Indian Music’ at the NCPA Experimental Theatre
Lyricist Javed Akhtar will give the keynote address at this year’s edition of the annual seminar organised by the National Centre for the Performing Arts in collaboration with the ITC Sangeet Research Academy. Musicians, media persons, recording company executives and music educators will discuss recent changes in the industry during the event, which will include a presentation on the role of Sangeet Natak Akademi in the promotion of Indian music. Indian classical musicians such as tabla player Zakir Hussain, santoor player Shiv Kumar Sharma, flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and singer Shekhar Sen are expected to participate in the concluding session that will be moderated by sitar player Arvind Parikh. CULTURE Ballard Estate Festival
The south Mumbai business district of Ballard Estate will turn into an entertainment zone with food and shopping stalls and cultural shows every Saturday and Sunday until the end of May during this four month-long neighbourhood festival organised by the Mumbai Port Trust. This weekend, the events will include music gigs by hip hop band Bombay Bassment, which will perform on Saturday, January 23, and Hindi pop-rock singer-songwriter Ankur Tewari and his band the Ghalat Family, who will take the stage on Sunday, January 24. The Symphony Orchestra of India’s music director Marat Bisengaliev will helm the opening concert of the SOI’s Spring 2016 season during which Russian pianist Sofya Gulyak’s will play Shostakovich’s first piano concerto. The concert will also feature a solo part by Spanish trump player Esteban Batallán. The recital will include works by Mozart, Rossini and Kazakh composer Kazhgaliev. MUSEUM EXHIBITION Tabiyat at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya
Organised by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, the British Council and the Wellcome Collection UK, this exhibition of artworks and objects related to medical practice and health in the subcontinent is capsule of Indian medical history.
