The Central Bureau of Investigation will look into three incidents of desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book, after Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal handed the cases over to them on Sunday. The CBI will follow up on three FIRs that were filed alleging sacrilege in the villages of Jawahar Singh Wala, Bajakhana and Bargadi.

The Punjab police had in October claimed they had solved the case and arrested two people in connection with the incidents. However, the government remained unconvinced that the police had made any serious headway in the case and even transferred police chief Sumedh Singh Saini on October 25. By giving the case to the CBI, Badal hopes to send out a strong signal "against the outrage", a statement from his office said.
