The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to hear a petition that asked for an immediate investigation into Congress Vice-President’s alleged British citizenship. The plea, filed on Monday, said the CBI should register a case against Gandhi as he had purportedly declared himself a British national. The Congress had refuted this claim, saying Gandhi has always been an Indian citizen.

Last week, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramaniam Swamy had alleged that Gandhi claimed to have a British passport when asked to testify in connection with an incorporation case in the United Kingdom. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Swamy said this was unconstitutional and if found true, should lead to Gandhi being stripped of his Lok Sabha membership and citizenship.
