World’s first ‘slum museum’ to open in Mumbai’s Dharavi

The world’s first slum museum will open in Mumbai in February, organisers said on Tuesday. It will feature a variety of objects manufactured in one of Asia’s biggest slums, Dharavi, such as pottery, textiles and recycled items, AFP reported. Spanish artist Jorge Rubio, who is behind the ‘Design Museum Dharavi’ initiative, said, “It will be the first museum ever created in a slum.”
The small mobile museum will be open for two months from February. The organisers said their objective is to challenge people’s perceptions of slums by highlighting slum-dwellers’ creative talent.
Dharavi, which is home to more than a million people who work in the area’s mini-factories, became a tourist attraction after being the focus of Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.
