A short animated film by Indian-American artist Sanjay Patel has been nominated for the Oscars in the "Short Film Animated" category. The Pixar film is about a young Indian boy who imagines Hindu gods as superheroes. It is inspired by Patel's own childhood in the United States when he felt conflicted by the modern world and the Hindu traditions of his Indian-origin family. The seven-minute film premiered at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France last year.

The Martian and The Revenant were among eight films nominated for Best Picture, with their lead actors Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio also in the running for Best Actor. The Revenant director Alejandro G. Iñárritu is one of the favourites to win in his category, while DiCaprio is also looking to bag his first Oscar. The film also leads the Oscar field with as many as 12 nominations.

The Oscars, or the Academy Awards, will be presented at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on February 28. Here is a complete list of the nominees:
