Centre to investigate complaints of casteism at IIMC Delhi
A group of students wrote to the National Commission of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes about derogatory comments made towards tribal-caste students.
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has ordered an investigation into complaints of casteism by students at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Delhi. The students said a group of their peers had harassed them and run an online campaign with anti-Dalit and anti-tribal caste posts, reported Hindustan Times. The group of around 17 students who wrote to the IIMC authorities said they do not want “punitive action” against their peers, but asked for a public apology and a “undertaking against the person” spreading these messages.
The students have approached the National Commission of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes with a formal petition. The students also wrote to the Ministry of Social Justice, and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs asking for caste sensitisation classes to be organised at the institution. An I&B ministry official told The Indian Express that joint secretary Mihir Singh will submit a report on the matter by February 10.
