Prime Minister Narendra Modi and lakhs of All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam workers wished Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on her 68th birthday on Wednesday. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief is unlikely to make a public appearance, but that hasn't stopped party cadre across the state in going all out in celebration.

According to reports, more than 1,000 AIADMK workers got tattoos of Amma, as she is popularly known as. A 68 kg cake was cut at the party headquarters in Chennai, and saplings will be planted at more than 6,800 temples in all 32 state districts. Medical camps and blood donation drives were held, and more than 200 Amma canteens distributed free food. Donations and gifts were also announced for babies born in the state on her birthday. An AIADMK MLA even floated in water for 48 minutes in what he claimed was a show of devotion to Amma.

Celebrations had begun earlier in the month, with AIADMK cadre organising mass marriages – 68 couples got married to mark Amma’s birthday. On Tuesday, opposition party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam attacked Jayalalithaa and accused her of being absent when floods hit Tamil Nadu at the end of last year. This did not do much to hinder celebrations, though.
