Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday sent a legal notice to Digvijaya Singh after the Congress leader accused him of nepotism. On Saturday, Singh had tweeted that the state’s Slum Rehabilitation Authority directed developers to submit their bank account details with the Axis Bank's Worli branch to pay rent to eligible slum dwellers because Fadnavis’ wife was the vice president of the bank. Singh called it the “height of nepotism”.

A clarification issued by Fadnavis’ office said Maharashtra’s previous Congress-led government had told the SRA to choose between Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank for the task. It also said that his wife worked in the corporate section of the bank’s Lower Parel branch and that she had no targets to achieve, PTI reported.

The legal notice asked for an unconditional apology from the Congress leader within two weeks, which if not given, will lead to legal proceedings against Singh. CNN-IBN reported that after Fadnavis’ legal notice, the state’s Congress chief Manikrao Thakre also sent a notice to Singh.
