Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up his visit to Brussels early Thursday and left for Washington, where he will attend the Nuclear Security Summit as part of his three-nation tour. The United States is hosting around 50 world leaders at the event, where the threat of nuclear terror will be discussed.

Modi on Wednesday reiterated the need for the United Nations to address the global challenge of countering terrorism. Addressing the Indian diaspora in Brussels towards the end of his trip to Belgium for the India-European Union Summit, Modi said that if the UN fails to address such major challenges, the global body could be rendered irrelevant, reported PTI.

Modi said it was unfortunate that the UN was still unable to define terrorism and act on a resolution that prescribes action against the countries that support or give shelter to terrorists. In the backdrop of the Brussels terror attacks, he said while world was feeling the impact of terrorism only now, India has been facing this menace for over 40 years. Modi had made similar comments during his US trip last year and at the India-Africa Forum Summit.

After his two-day trip to Washington, Modi will travel to Saudi Arabia with a focus on boosting energy and security cooperation.
