Two people were killed on Tuesday after Indian Army soldiers opened fire at protestors in Handwara town in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, IBN Live reported. The protests began after a girl, whose age has not been reported, was allegedly molested by army personnel. Police said security forces opened fire after protestors threw stones at them.

However, ANI quoted Inspector General of Police SJM Gillani as saying that two people were hurt, and later succumbed to their injuries, when security forces retaliated after a crowd tried to ransack the Army bunker and set it on fire. The situation is now under control, he added.

The Indian Army issued a statement saying it "deeply regrets the unfortunate loss of life", adding that "the matter will be investigated and anybody found guilty will be dealt with as per the law."
