One person was killed when the Indian Army opened fire on protestors in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday. Seven other people were reportedly injured. According to reports, the person who was killed was Arif Ahmad, a Class XI student.

A police official told PTI that the security forces began firing after a mob started to pelt stones at an Indian Army camp. An army official said, "A group of protesters were pelting stones at the camp, but the soldiers exercised restraint. However, the situation started going out of hand as a large number of them tried to storm the camp from all directions."

The district has been facing curfew-like restrictions and a ban on mobile internet services after protests began earlier this week following the alleged molestation of a local minor girl by an army officer. Four people died in Handwara after security personnel opened fire on violent protestors on Tuesday.

The newly-appointed People’s Democratic Party government on Wednesday had advised security forces to exercise maximum restraint while dealing with protestors. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has come under criticism for the violence in the area.
