Mumbai Indians got a much-needed win under their belt in the 2016 Indian Premier League, beating Kings XI Punjab by a whopping 25-run margin in Mohali on Monday. The win took Mumbai to fifth in the table, while Punjab remained at the bottom with their fifth loss of the season in six games.

Punjab skipper David Miller won the toss for the first time this season and went with the trend of chasing teams being more successful in this edition. His decision to put Mumbai in seemed to pay off immediately as his counterpart Rohit Sharma was dismissed off the second ball of the innings.

However, Parthiv Patel and Ambati Rayudu combined to put on Mumbai's highest partnership this season – 137 runs – as they helped power the visitors to 189/6 in 20 overs. Patel's 81 off 58 balls was his highest ever in the IPL, while Rayudu was unusually aggressive, blasting 65 runs off just 37 balls, including four sixes. Rayudu was dropped on 33 by Axar Patel and made the hosts pay.

Jos Buttler also had a brief cameo (24 off 13 balls) towards the end, as Mumbai put on a competitive total. The visitors could have got more if not for a superb last over bowled by Mohit Sharma (3/38), in which he conceded only four runs and took two wickets.

Punjab lost their openers Murali Vijay and Mayank Vohra quite early, for just 32 runs, before Shaun Marsh (45 off 34 balls) and Glenn Maxwell (56 off 39 balls) got together. The Australian pair set about getting their team back on track, stitching together an 89-run partnership that lasted till the end of the 15th over. At that stage, Punjab still required 69 off the last five overs. They had a chance, with Maxwell and Miller still at the crease.

However, Maxwell's fall in the 18th over with the score at 139/4 put an end to any hopes of a blockbuster finish. Miller (30 not out off 17 balls) stayed on till the end, but couldn't do much by himself as the hosts fell short by 25 runs.
