Border with Bangladesh will be sealed in two years, says Sarbananda Sonowal
Assam’s next chief minister announced the move to put an end to cross-border infiltration.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday said India’s borders with Bangladesh will be sealed in two years, PTI reported. Sonowal, who will be Assam’s next chief minister, had brought up the issue in his election campaigns as a move to end infiltration from Bangladesh. Home Minister Rajnath Singh in January said that construction of a fence along the Assam border will be completed by the end of the year.
“Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had given a two-year time frame for permanent sealing of the border. We will work towards finishing within that time frame the border sealing work, including the riverine border," he told PTI. He added that the government will create awareness about infiltration and that it would organise events along the border, like at Wagah in Punjab, to develop tourism in the area.
The BJP was elected to power in the Assam’s Assembly election, ending the Congress’ 15-year rule in the state. The party won 89 of Assam’s 126 Assembly seats.
