Telecom authority seeks more power from Centre in an effort to penalise companies for call drops
According to an independent survey by Trai, incidents of call drops increased in the Delhi/NCR area in the month of May.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has decided to approach the Centre to get help on making service providers pay penalties for call drops, reported The Indian Express. “We will write to the Department of Telecommunications today for an amendment in the Trai Act to give us more power,” it said.
This comes following the Supreme Court order that rejected the regulator's idea to levy financial penalties on operators for call drops. According to an independent survey done by Trai, incidents of call drops has increased in the Delhi/NCR area in the month of May, when the apex court verdict was passed.
On Wednesday, Trai also launched an app using which people can easily register complaints against telemarketers flooding them with unwanted calls and messages, reported The Hindu. The DND (do not call) Services app is currently available for phones functioning on Android, Windows and Java operating systems. The government is working towards developing the same for iOS users.
“TRAI has developed a mobile App for easy registration of UCC complaints to the service providers. With this App, the consumer can also check the status of his complaint. The app is available in the Google App store and Mobile Seva App store,” the telecom regulator said. The conventional method of filing complaints in connection with such calls and messages is through toll free number 1909.
