The dimensions of cricket bats should be limited to restore balance in the game, an International Cricket Council committee said on Friday. Chaired by former India captain Anil Kumble, the ICC Cricket Committee made the recommendation to the Marylebone Cricket Club, which is the guardian of the laws of the game. This comes after several experts have raised concerns that big scores in limited-overs cricket and mishits landing in the stands is because of the increasing width of bats, reported PTI.

“[The] MCC sought the committee’s guidance on the desirability of making changes in order to redress the balance between bat and ball,” the ICC said in a statement. “The Committee received a research paper from MCC citing a wealth of scientific and statistical evidence showing bats have become more powerful in recent years, primarily due to having larger ‘sweet-spots’. The committee’s view was that MCC should strongly consider limiting the dimensions of cricket bats to help achieve a better balance between bat and ball,” the statement added.

The committee also expressed concerns that there are still many international cricketers who are wearing helmets that did not meet the latest British Safety Standards. Apart from Kumble, the committee comprises other former captains such as Rahul Dravid, Mahela Jayawardene and Andrew Strauss.
