A sailor and a civilian worker died on board the INS Vikramaditya on Friday, while the warship underwent a refit at Karwar base. Reports said four people were working in the sewage treatment plant, in the lower section of the 20-storey tall warship, and inhaled toxic fumes. Two people were injured.

The two victims were identified as shipwright artificer Rakesh Kumar and Mohandas Kolambkar, an employee of M/s Royal Marine. They died at the naval hospital in Karwar. The Navy has reportedly ordered an investigation, and action has been taken to make the area on the ship secure, an officer told The Times of India. The aircraft carrier and warship is India’s largest.
