As many as 1.12 lakh people across seven districts in Assam have been declared affected by floods, as the monsoon situation worsened for the fifth continuous day. Neighbouring states, especially Arunachal Pradesh, were also badly hit. At least two people have been killed in a landslide over the past 24 hours, reported PTI. According to The Indian Express, nearly 1,000 people have been shifted to four relief camps in Ghorpholia and Dhekorgorah.

The Army has been engaged to carry out relief operations. Six State Disaster Management Response Force motorboats are rescuing people from the villages that have been marooned. PTI reported that Jorhat Superintendent of Police Amanjeet Kaur, along with her officials, surveyed different affected places and distributed food items.

In Jorhat district, more than 20 villages have been submerged. River Bhogdoi eroded about 200 metres of an embankment near Dhekargora near Jorhat town. Assam State Disaster Management Authority said the Brahmaputra may cause a major breach at Kokilamukh, about 5km from Jorhat town.

The Brahmaputra and several of its tributaries, like Bhogdoi, are flowing above the danger mark in many districts. Districts such as Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Golaghat, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Barpeta and many localities of Guwahati city remained inundated because of the floods caused by heavy rainfall since Wednesday night.

Of all the districts, Lakhimpur is the worst hit, with more than 52,000 people affected, reported Assam Tribune. In the island subdivision of Majuli in Jorhat district, more than 9,000 people have been affected. Boat ferry services between Majuli and Jorhat have been suspended temporarily.

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted more rain for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura in the next four days. The state had witnessed similar floods last year as well. More than 92,000 people in Assam were affected as floods wreaking havoc in six districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Cachar.
