The government-run Indian Oil Corp cut petrol prices in Delhi by Rs 1.42 a litre and diesel prices by Rs 2.01 a litre, effective from midnight on Sunday. The oil company sets prices for petrol in the Capital every two weeks, though rates change from state to state owing to local taxes.

The price of both fuels also fell in other states. Petrol now costs Rs 61.09 a litre in Delhi, Rs 64.97 a litre in Kolkata, Rs 60.65 a litre in Chennai and Rs 65.70 in Mumbai. The price of diesel dropped to Rs 52.57 a litre in Delhi and Rs 57.47 a litre in Mumbai. In Kolkata, diesel will cost Rs 54.57 a litre, while it will fetch Rs 53.73 a litre in Chennai.

On Thursday, crude oil closed lower at $40.81 a barrel, as against $41.63 the day before.
